The entire crowd rose to its collective feet, and for one brief moment Saturday, everyone’s eyes were pinned to the same match.
Davis County’s Ben Kincart and Mediapolis wrestler Dillon Wagner were the center of attention. Their match was the only one going because all the other first round contests had been completed at the Class 2A District 4 tournament Saturday at Fairfield High School.
The two burley heavyweights were drained by the end and it showed. Kincart could barley muster enough energy to mount one final charge with time running out on the third round clock. Wagner outlasted him and moved on, but would end up receiving second place after losing to Columbus Junction’s Kyle Davis in the match.
The tournament housed wrestlers from Albia, Mediapolis, Washington, Fairfield, Columbus Junction, Davis County, Mid-Prairie Wellman, Centerville, Chariton, Knoxville, PCM and West Burlington Notre Dame. Mediapolis won five weight divisions, while Albia and Columbus Junction both came in second with three first-place finishes.
At 106 pounds, Columbus Junction’s Josh Keller pinned PCM’s Chace Palm in 0:54 and Washington’s Andrew Waite got a 4 – 2 decision over Albia’s Kyle Sinnott to create a Keller-Waite title bout. Keller got a 7 – 0 decision over Waite to claim the title.
In the 113-pound bracket Kyle Anderson of Washington pinned Xavier Miller of PCM in 5:17 to move to the championship match but then came up on the short side of a 9 – 3 decision to Mediapolis’ Shea Swafford to finish in second place.
Washington’s undefeated and top-ranked 120-pound senior Fletcher Green stayed unbeaten by pinning Cody Smith of Davis County in 2:33 and then getting a 5 – 2 decision over Mason Buster of Mediapolis.
At 132 pounds Tristan Pohren of Washington advanced to the title bout with his 15 – 0 technical fall over Colin McNeill of Knoxville in 4:55 but then got pinned by Albia’s Bryce Leshen in 4:00. In the wrestle-back bout Pohren got a 10 – 4 decision over Mediapolis’ Brady Banwart to finish in second place.
The 182-pound bracket featured Phirom Peterschmidt of Mid-Prairie and Brad Skubal of Washington. Peterschmidt advanced to the championship with a pin of PCM’s Lucas Rains in 0:58 and Skubal got a 9 – 1 major decision over Knoxville’s Jac Agan to set up the match with Peterschmidt. Peterschmidt got the narrow 7 – 6 decision over Skubal to claim the title. Skubal then got a 10 – 0 major decision in the wrestle-back match over Rains to claim second place.
At 220 pounds Mark Ramirez of Columbus Junction placed first with two pins. The first came over Knoxville’s Brock Caviness in 1:56 and the second came over Ethan Lamm of Mediapolis in 1:49.
Jarek Brown of Washington took fourth at 138 pounds and Washington’s Alex Gonzalez did the same at 145 pounds. Demon senior Tanner Knupp took third in the 152-pound bracket. Tucker Morrison placed fourth for Columbus Junction at 170 pounds. Here are the results for the area wrestlers who will be wrestling at the state tournament.
