Officer rescues two women from flood Saturday

By Andy Hallman | Aug 27, 2014

FAIRFIELD — A pair of motorists had to be rescued from their cars by police Saturday morning after torrential rains flooded several streets in Fairfield.
The log from the Fairfield Police Department states that Sgt. Mark Kukuzke received a call at 7:49 a.m. to help a woman stuck in her car near the intersection of South Seventh Street and West Jefferson Avenue.
Kukuzke arrived at the scene and noticed a car floating in the water just south of the intersection. A male subject yelled at him, telling him a woman was stuck in the car and that it was sinking in the water. Kukuzke said in the police log the water was as high as his chest. He waded out to the car and found Christine Schrock inside. He said she was extremely scared and could not open her car door, so he helped her climb out the window.
After Kukuzke transported Schrock to safety on the side of the road, he noticed another female who was also stuck in her car. He waded out to her and helped her out of her car and on to safe ground. He said both cars sank almost up to their roofs by the time the rain stopped.
City crews were called to put up barricades and clean the gravel off the road.
