Offseason wrestling tournaments begin
BROOKLYN – For wrestlers in the state of Iowa, there is no real offseason. Five Washington wrestlers participated in the BGM Takedown Tournament on Friday, March 7 at BGM High School.
Kyle Anderson and Jarek Brown both took first place in their brackets, Anderson won all five of his matches and Brown won all three of his.
Alex Latcham was the runner-up in his bracket going 2-1. Andrew Waite went 1-2 to finish third in his bracket as did Bryce Craft and Alex Gonzalez.
More spring camps, summer camps and tournaments are available for wrestlers of all ages. Many of the events are available at little to no cost to the students and their families thanks to the efforts of the Washington Matbackers.
“It’s imperative that our wrestlers get into the weight room now if they aren’t playing a spring sport. We need to get faster and stronger because our opponents are doing that this spring. Our competition has been in the weight room for two weeks already and they are working on getting better. We wrestle in a tough conference and district. Fort Madison and Mediapolis are gunning for us all the time and I want the days of losing to them to be in the past. The community here in Washington does a great job of providing opportunities for these kids to get better. They need to take advantage of them,” Washington High School head wrestling coach Brent Van Weelden said.
