Portrait of Memorial F. Miller finds home in Walnut School
Rodney Link of Rock Island, Ill., and Pat Johnson of theWalnut Womeºn’s Club, hang a portrait of Memorial F. Miller in Walnut School, a one-room country school, located about five miles south of Washington on Highway 1. Miller donated the land for the school in 1862. The portrait was donated to the school in August by Miller’s great-great-granddaughter, Deidree Miller Zehr of Washington. Also at the event were two of Link’s classmates Dorothy Nelson Allison and James Wertz, both of Washington. The three represent the classes of 1956 and 1957. The school was closed in 1959. The Walnut Women’s Club is hosting an open house at the school, as well as other county historical sites, from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15.
