Public invited to welcome veterans home from Honor Flight
The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight will leave from the Eastern Iowa Airport on Tuesday, April 22, for the first flight of the 2014 season. There will be a total of 83 veterans on this flight plus their guardians. The veterans include 13 from World War II.
Veterans will begin reporting in at the airport at about 5:15 a.m., with a takeoff time of 7 a.m. They will arrive at Reagan National Airport at approximately 10:15 a.m. (ET). The veterans will visit the World War II, Korean and other memorials dedicated to their service and sacrifice. The day will also include a stop at Arlington National Cemetery where they will witness the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknowns.
The group will return to Cedar Rapids at approximately 10:45 p.m. (CST). All members of the community or anyone interested in seeing a truly wonderful event are invited to come out to the airport and take part in the welcome home ceremony.
Many of these veterans never received a thank-you or welcome home when they returned from service and this is the opportunity to do just that.
This flight is sponsored and made possible through a generous grant by the Washington County Riverboat Foundation, and will include veterans from Washington County on the flight.
