Readers and Writers, Fortnightly
Six members of the Readers and Writers Department of Fortnightly met March 14, 2013, at the Washington Public Library.
Chairperson Patty Roe conducted the business meeting. Ellen Krueger will represent the club at the May executive board meeting. Members were reminded of the annual breakfast on May 7. The group discussed donations to the Fortnightly scholarship fund and made a list of suggested topics for next year’s programs. The May meeting will be a work session to be spent cleaning books at the library.
Topic for the day was “If I Were a Fly On the Wall.” Esther Bordwell shared a story she had written about a fly’s thwarted quest for food, beginning in a bakery on a wintry day. Ellen Krueger shared family genealogy she had prepared, regarding ancestors who had met during the Trail of Tears march, married, and raised a large family. Other readings were from a magazine article by a former Washington resident who appreciated growing up on an Iowa farm, and from a Don Marquis book about the adventures of Archie and Mehitabel, a cockroach and an alley cat, respectively.
The next meeting will be on April 11 at 3:30 p.m. in the Washington Public Library. The suggested topic is “A Life-changing Event.” Guests and potential members are welcome.
