Recorder’s office reports deed scam
The Washington County Recorder’s Office has received several inquiries regarding a company from California that is contacting property owners and offering, for a fee, to obtain a copy of their deed. The notices that have been brought into the Recorder’s office are charging $83, which is much more than the photocopy fee or e-mail fee the county charges. Unfortunately, some people fall for this scheme that appears every few years. When a property is purchased, at the time of closing the new owner receives a deed regardless of whether there is a mortgage on the property. If at any time the deed cannot be found, a photocopy can always be received from the Recorder’s office. Please contact the Recorder’s office at 319-653-7727 or firstname.lastname@example.org if there are any questions.
