Relay for Life kickoff Thursday

By Xiomara Levsen | Mar 25, 2014

A kickoff event will be held this Thursday evening for Relay for Life.
Ruchel Hiller, event chair for the 2014 Relay for Life, said the kickoff is to help share information and bring awareness about the changes for this year’s event.
The kickoff will be held at JP’s 207 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening, Hiller said. Participants can come and get their information packets or sign up as a team.
“Our goal is to have 18 teams signed up,” Hiller said. “I know of one more team that will be signing up the night of our kickoff event.”
Another focus will be to begin raising awareness for this year’s Relay for Life event, which will be held Aug. 23.
“We just want to get people excited and get it into the forefront of their minds,” she said. “It’s not that far off—from the kickoff day there’s 149 days until the event.”
The time for the event has also changed. Relay for Life will begin at 10 a.m. and end at 10 p.m., Hiller said.
“It just seems with having it in June there were so many conflicts,” she said. “We decided to end at 10 p.m. because by that time families with younger children were leaving. We’re hoping by changing the time more people will stay and experience the closing ceremony.”
The theme for this year’s Relay for Life is tailgating, which will be incorporated into some of the events the committee is planning.
“In August you think of football, and with football comes tailgating,” Hiller said. “This will be a really neat way of doing things this year. We’ll have a cook-off contest at the relay event.”
Hiller hopes to see a lot of people Thursday evening.
“Even if you don’t want to be on a team or don’t know much about Relay for Life and are curious, come on Thursday to the kickoff. We would love to see you there,” she said.
