SEISC wrestling tournament wrap-up
PEKIN - The Southeast Iowa Super Conference Wrestling Tournament took place at Pekin High School on Saturday, Feb. 1. Out of the 11 teams participating, Columbus Community took third place with 121.5 points, Highland fifth with 98 points and WACO tied for 10th with 37 points.
Highland’s Drew West took first place in the 106-pound bracket, defeating Josh Keller of Columbus in the championship bout with a fall in 0:37. Bryce West, Drew’s twin brother, also took the title for 113 pounds. Armando Quiroz of Columbus took fifth place at 113 pounds.
The Wildcats’ Mitchell Griffin took second in the 120-pound bracket. Columbus’ Johnny Quinn wrestled in the 126-pound bracket and ended up with seventh place.
In the 132-pound bracket, Travis Cole took second place for Highland and Zach King took fifth for Columbus. At 145 pounds, Josh Boyd placed seventh for the Wildcats and Adrian Unternahrer took eighth for WACO.
The Warriors’ Jorge Chacon and Columbus’ Nick Bloomquist both wrestled at 152 pounds. Chacon took sixth place and Bloomquist seventh. Casey Castillo of the Huskies and Mauricio Ramirez of the Wildcats were part of the 160-pound bracket. Castillo placed fifth and Ramirez took seventh place.
The 170-pound bracket featured Tucker Morrison from Columbus and Cey Saeugling from WACO. Morrison wrestled his way to third place and Saeugling to second place. The Wildcats’ Mark Ramirez placed second in the 195-pound bracket.
At 220 pounds, Columbus’ Kyle Davis took second place. Josh Shumaker finished fourth in the 285-pound bracket.
Columbus will participate in Sectionals at Washington High School on Saturday, Feb. 8. Highland will wrestle again on Saturday, Feb. 8 at Lisbon High School. WACO is on the mat again Saturday, Feb. 8 at New London.
