Standard for Life
Today I want to encourage you to think about the standard of life that we live by or go by and where we get that standard and what it is set by and why we go by that standard. A standard is having a recognized and permanent value, a means of determining what a thing should be, something established by authority, custom or general consent as a model or example. Our standard of life is made up of standards that affect our lives, how we dress, how we talk, goals that we pursue, moral values, etc. Where do we get the standards that we go by? To me there are two standards that we go by or can go by and they are God's standard and man's standard.
God's standard for man was established for mankind when He created man in the beginning. It has never changed. Man's standard for man has come about by man's philosophies. They change from time to time and from cultural backgrounds as man thinks they should be. In the beginning God created man by a set standard and that standard was set by God Himself when He said, "Let Us make Man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over cattle, over all the earth and every creeping thing that creeps the earth." The standard for man was to be in the likeness and image of God. We were not created to be gods, but to be like Him in our thoughts and words and doings. Then He set the standard to how this was to be brought about. When Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden in the beginning they walked and lived in the standard that God had set for them and they experienced the joy of life, walking and talking with God daily and living in a personal relationship with their Creator. Then something happened that changed their lives completely and has affected every way of life that man has lived down through the ages since that time.
Satan, the devil, in the form of a serpent came to the woman and the man and challenged them of the truth or righteousness of God's standard. The woman and the man listened and broke from the standard that God had them for. God had a standard by which He designed them and a standard by which they were to live that they could enjoy the fullness of God's love. They chose to go by man's standard and the results of this has been a plague to mankind down through the ages and is still very real today. Man's standards as we look at the shape of the world today — wars, greed, corruption, sexual immorality, lack of moral values as man goes to fulfill his own lusts and desires rather than the standard God has for us. Man designed man according to His standard and then He set the standard for life that when we live according to that standard we can have the abundant life that God designed us to have and the abundant life that Jesus came and made available to us. Jesus said, "The thief does not dome except to steal, kill and to destroy. I have come that they may have life and that they might have it more abundantly." The standard for life, God's standard. What standard will yours be? Remember God loves and cares about us, each and everyone!
