Three second-half goals lift IMS over Central Lee
DONNELLSON — No. 11 IMS scored three second-half goals to defeat host Central Lee 3-0 in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys’ soccer match on Thursday evening.
Even though IMS (6-2, 5-1 SEISC) controlled play throughout the first half of Thursday’s match, the visitors struggled to adjust to playing on the Hawks’ football field. But in the second half, IMS made some adjustments and picked up its level of play.
Seven minutes into the second half, senior Peyton Thompson sent a ball wide to junior Reggie Hostetler, who beat his defender and deftly slid the ball across the middle to junior Enrique Sanchez. Sanchez took a look at the goal and buried the ball in the far corner of the net to give IMS a 1-0 lead.
Just minutes later, senior Nicholas Yoder gathered in a ball near the top of the penalty box and passed it to senior Dillon Bender, who turned the ball into the net. Hostetler finished the scoring after being sprung with a wonderful through pass. Going one-on-one with the Central Lee goalie, Hostetler beat him and struck the ball into the net.
The IMS defense of Justin Boller, Cody Miller, Jameson Lammer, Michael Hershberger and Kirby Shetler shut down the counter-attack strategy of Central Lee, while Hostetler and Joel Shetler combined for the shutout in goal.
