Turnout not high for municipal elections
City elections will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, in Washington County.
According to Washington County Auditor Dan Widmer, 49 absentee ballots have been received at the courthouse so far. He said this is about the average amount of absentee ballots the office receives for city elections and doesn’t expect a big turnout for city elections.
“The turnout varies from election to election,” Widmer said. “It also depends on whether or not there are contested races.”
He gave the presidential election last fall as an example.
“Last fall there were 5,000 absentee ballots and we had 75 percent of voters turned for the presidential election,” Widmer said. “It was a bigger election that more people were interested in.”
Widmer also said the turnout hasn’t been very high for other general elections, such as the school board elections, which were held in September. In Washington only 2.28 percent of voters turned out to vote, according to the results from the auditor’s office.
Voters can still vote by absentee ballot at the Washington County Courthouse. The deadline to vote by absentee ballot at the courthouse is Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. Hours for the auditor’s office are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5, according to the auditor’s office.
