Two committees request public help in events
With June 1 and the start of the 175th anniversary celebration quickly approaching, members of two of the committees are requesting people get involved and join the fun during the event.
Area artists are invited to try their hand at helping to create a visual memory of the Washington square during Arts and Crafts Day on June 4. Between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. artists will be asked to sketch their observations on one side of the Washington square. Materials will be provided for the event. Members of the South East Iowa Artists and other participating groups will provide instruction. For more information, contact Karen Moenck at 653-8748.
Jerome Vittetoe, the co-chair of Ag Day, which will be held June 5, is also requesting the help of antique tractor owners. An antique tractor parade is scheduled to leave the Washington County Fairgrounds at 4 p.m. He asks antique tractor owners who love driving and displaying their machines to report to the fairgrounds at 3 p.m. to sign up and get registered for the event. The route will take drivers past Halcyon House, to the UP Home and on to the square. Vittetoe expects the drivers to reach the square by 6 p.m. The tractors, hopefully at least 175 of them, will then be displayed before returning to the fairgrounds. For more information, contact Vittetoe at 319-430-0797.
The Washington Chamber of Commerce also reminds people that volunteers are needed to help facilitate several of the events during the week. To volunteer to be a part of the 175th anniversary celebration, call the Chamber of Commerce at 653-3272.
