To the Editor:
The Washington County Jail rape trial may be past history, but did the rendered verdict pass the smell test? Many, including me, still have a nagging feeling there are many unanswered questions. Has someone just made the whole thing evaporate? The responsibility of a jailer is to protect his “clientele” regardless of their origin and the inquiring public does have a right to know and to hear it from local law authorities, not a Des Moines newspaper. Transparency is the word! With all the state-of-the-art surveillance technology, it is still incomprehensible such an horrendous crime could occur and no on-duty jailer was aware of it.
The trial is over, but those nagging unanswered questions still pique our every fiber. Questions, the trial verdict, coupled with local law officials’ remarks, begs the question: Was justice served or did prejudice win?
