COLUMBUS JUNCTION — All seven Warriors who played also scored, but it was Bryce Achen and Braden Blake who powered the WACO boys’ basketball team to a 68-65 win over Columbus on Friday night.
Achen had a team-high 19 points and Blake added 18 in the Warriors’ first win of the season.
“Achen and Blake both had their best scoring game of the year by far, and both played a real good all-around game,” WACO Coach Bob Hilmer said.
The Warriors also played well as a team in the close contest.
“We played very well — it was the first real close game we’ve been in,” Hilmer said. “We did a real good job: we forced turnovers when we were behind and managed to put the ball in hole — not always as planned, but we did find open people to take shots.”
The Warriors had a 19-11 lead after the first quarter and were up 35-31 at halftime. However, by the end of the third quarter, Columbus had a one-point lead at 50-49.
After going back and forth early in the fourth quarter, WACO trailed by two when Blake hit a 3-pointer that gave the Warriors the lead for good with about three minutes remaining in the game.
Blake scored again on WACO’s next possession to put the Warriors up by three. Blake, Jackson Roth and Dylan Carlson all hit free throws down the stretch to maintain an edge, and Columbus’ last-second shot was off its mark, sealing the victory for the Warriors.
Dylan Carlson, who is leading WACO with 12.3 points per game on the season, was limited by foul trouble in Friday’s contest, and he fouled out in the last minute of play. Tucker Janecek went out on fouls with three minutes left in the game.
“We were glad to win it in regulation,” Hilmer said.
Jackson Roth scored 12 points for WACO in the contest, sinking a team-high three 3-pointers. Cornell Hulme made two shots from deep and finished with six points. Janecek scored five, while Carlson and Jackson Gerot chipped in four points each.
Blake also pulled down 13 boards for the double-double, and Dylan Carlson had 11 rebounds. Achen grabbed seven boards.
Blake dished six assists, while Roth and Tucker Janecek had four each. Achen had five steals and Roth finished with three thefts. Carlson blocked two shots.
WACO is now 1-6 on the season and in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division. The Warriors are scheduled to host Louisa-Muscatine on Tuesday.
