WACO takes fourth, Columbus wins one
WACO held a season-opening volleyball tournament on Monday afternoon, and finished in fourth place.
The Warriors took home a victory in its first match of the day, 2-0 over Centerville, then fell to Iowa Valley, the eventual tournament champion, 0-2. WACO defeated Maharishi, in straight sets to earn a spot in the consolation game, where they fell in close sets to Wapello, 0-2.
In the consolation game, the Warriors lost the two sets by a combined 8 points.
Columbus also took part in the WACO tournament, and picked up its first win of the year.
After dropping matches to Wapello and Pekin in straight sets, the Wildcats rebounded for a 2-1 win over Van Buren.
On the night for the Wildcats, Laura Mincks and Kelsey Pretz were the offensive and defensive leaders. Mincks and Pretz tied for the team lead in kills, with six apiece.
Mincks picked up a team-high 10 digs, followed by Bailey Stroud’s nine and Pretz’s seven, while Pretz led the team with six blocks.
Kortney Orr had a nice night serving the ball, going 18-for-25 in service attempts and notching six aces on the night.
WACO will take on Highland on Sept. 4 for its next contest, while Columbus travels to Wapello on Sept. 2.
