Wapello rallies past IMS
WAPELLO — IMS scored two runs in the first inning of Wednesday’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division baseball game at Wapello, but the host Indians rallied for a 3-2 win.
Senior Aaron Ockenfels, who went 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, had an RBI single in the first inning for IMS (3-3, 3-3 SEISC North), and junior Tanner Leyden also had an RBI single in the first.
“Wapello did a good job of keeping our hitters off balance at the plate and our offense was not able to get going again after the first inning,” IMS head coach Danny Hershberger said.
Wapello (8-3, 4-1 SEISC North) responded with a run in the bottom of the first, and the Indians added runs in the second and third innings. Seniors Brandon Lincoln and Gage Carpenter hit solo home runs for the Indians, and junior Brayden Lanz also drove in a run.
IMS put the tying run on base in the seventh inning when No. 9 hitter Brent Brenneman came up with a key two-out hit, and he moved to second on a passed ball, but senior Cameron Gingerich flew out to left field to end the game. Gingerich and juniors Reggie Hostetler and Dallas Nye added hits for IMS.
Gingerich took the loss for IMS on the mound. He gave up three runs, two of which were earned, on just four hits in six innings. He struck out six batters and did not issue a walk.
