The Washington boys’ track and field team won a pair of events and finished fourth in the team standings at Thursday night’s Demon Relays at Case Field.

Sophomore Tommy Peterson got the Demons off to a good start, as his career-best throw of 46 feet, 4 inches won the shot put competition.

“We’re very pleased with Tommy’s progress,” Washington head coach Steve Roth said. “Coach [Scott] Danielson has been working with him, and he’s really getting his body moving forward. To go 46-4 and win it is outstanding.”

Washington’s 4x200 relay team of Carl Sivels, Gage Redlinger, Kyle Roder and Alex Coker took first place in 1:35.44. The Demons ran a time of 1:35.11 at the Mt. Pleasant Co-Ed the week before, and Roth said the quartet will run an even lower time if it can clean up its handoffs.

“We had a handoff that cost us dearly,” Roth said. “When all four guys get on the same page, we’re going to be pretty good.”

The same four runners took second place in the 4x100 relay in 45.60 seconds.

Coker, a junior, had a big night for the Demons. Besides anchoring Washington’s 4x100 and 4x200 relays, he also won the long jump competition with a leap of 20 feet, 11 inches, and he finished second in the 100-meter dash in 11.74 seconds.

“Coker had another nice night,” Roth said.

Sophomore Jacob Hennigan finished third in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.84 seconds, and senior Logan Moeller was fifth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:05.19. Senior Austin Witt took fourth place in the 200-meter dash in 24.77 seconds. Junior Austin Latcham finished sixth in the discus with a throw of 108 feet, 1.5 inches.

Washington’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Hennigan, Redlinger, Roder and Moeller took second place in 1:06.26, and the Demons’ 4x800 relay team of Michael Ellingson, Latcham, Justin Hoffman and Alan Sanchez finished third in 9:21.19.

Roth said that Thursday’s meet was a steppingstone toward where he wants his team to be at the end of the season.

“It was a nice night to be able to compete,” he said. “[Girls’ coach] Stefanie [Tschantz] and I would like to thank everyone who helped make last night a great meet.”
