Washington County Genealogical Society

Sep 19, 2013

The Washington County Genealogical Society met Sept. 3, 2013, with 12 members and one guest in attendance.

Susan Clark was the featured speaker. She gave a very interesting talk on heirloom fruits and vegetables from her garden. Susan brought several heirloom seed catalogs. She also brought and talked about many examples of heirloom varieties of produce from her garden, some of which had interesting names like Dragon Tongue Bush Beans, Pennsylvania Butter Popcorn, Ukrainian Pickle, Mr. Stripey Tomato, Cannelloni Beans, Pink Peach Tomato and many others. She related how she got started when her mother was given some Czechoslovakian lettuce, which tasted extremely sweet, and the project just took off from there. She explained how some of the seeds are saved to be planted the next spring.

It was announced that the society had gained eight new members during the open house. The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be held in the genealogy room of the Washington Public Library at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1.
