Washington County Genealogical Society
The Washington County Genealogical Society met at the Washington Public Library March 4 with 14 members and guests present. Fred Stark, the “Iowa trivia king,” was the speaker. His program covered some interesting facts about Iowa towns. He used a large state map as he told about ethnic settlers, where they settled and how their towns reflected their homelands. Towns on rail lines or chosen for county seats are the most successful. Many towns promote the fact that a famous person had lived there. He also told of unusual slogans that towns have chosen. He closed giving the finer points about Washington.
David Horsey will be the speaker at the April 1 meeting. His program is “1939: The Year of Building.” He will tell of the many different building projects, some of which were helped by the WPA, in Washington 75 years ago.
The society voted to send a letter to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission opposing a new casino.
