Washington JV girls’ basketball update
The Washington High School girls’ junior varsity basketball team has split a pair of games over the past week. They defeated the Oskaloosa Indians at home on Saturday, January 18 50 - 14 and then fell on the road to the Muscatine Muskies 50 - 36.
Speaking about the win over Oskaloosa, coach Jay Zieglowsky said, “Overall, I believe we played our best game of the year. We played tremendous defense, as indicated by their low scoring. Our press was tremendously effective, especially in the first and third quarters, although we didn’t press much in the 3rd quarter. And, our transition game was superb. I always tell our girls, our best offense is when we don’t have to run one...meaning we are really good when we are running our transition game and don’t have to set up in an offense.”
Against Oskaloosa sophomore Amber Salow had 11 points. Sophomore Macy Marek had 10 points, three rebounds and an assist. Sophomore Brynna DeLong had five points and four rebounds. Junior Sydney Hoffman had five points.
Junior Elle Van Gundy pulled down seven rebounds. Sophomore Addie Pacha got four rebounds. Juniors Makenna Goodwin and Jordan Stout each contributed three rebounds. Freshman Lexi Evans and sophomore Morgan Kimball each had an assist.
Zieglowsky gave credit to Muscatine’s defense for limiting Washington’s shot opportunities.
At Muscatine freshman Lexi Redlinger and Salow each had six points. Van Gundy scored four. Evans, Stout, DeLong and junior Rachael Hall all contibuted three points. Evans and DeLong each added two rebounds to their stat lines as well.
Sophomore Dylann Schluetter led the Demons with five rebounds. Junior Addison Gaal and Hoffman both pulled down three.
The Washington girls’ JV team will play at Fairfield on Friday, Jan. 24.
