Washington middle school wrestlers wrap up their season
The Washington middle school wrestling team wrapped up a successful 2012-13 season when it hosted Burlington, Keokuk and Oskaloosa for a meet on Tuesday night. The Demons won 18 of their 33 matches on the night, and they compiled a record of 227-182 on the season.
Eighth-grader Trey Van Weelden went 2-0 on Tuesday night and finished with a perfect record of 18-0 on the season. Twelve of his wins were by fall.
“Trey was 18-0 with 12 pins, so that was pretty dominating,” Washington head coach Shawn Ellingson said.
Eighth-grader Karlton Skubal won a match and finished 8-0 on the season with all eight wins by fall. Eighth-grader Kyle Anderson won both of his matches to finish 18-1 on the season, and eighth-grader Austin Hazelett went 2-0 to improve to 13-2. Eighth-grader Andrew Waite won both of his matches and finished the season with a 15-3 record, and eighth-graders Chandler Reid and Seth Townsend both finished the year 12-3. Seventh-grader Tanner Murphy went 1-1 on Tuesday night to finish the season with a record of 12-3, and eighth-grader Gabe Greiner was 11-3 this season. Eighth-grader Alex Latcham capped a 13-5 season with a pair of wins on Tuesday night.
“Several kids had outstanding seasons,” Ellingson said. “Nine of our top 10 are eighth-graders who are going to be moving on to high school next year.”
Seventh-graders Kiowa Keith and Cody Mellinger both went 2-0 at Tuesday’s meet, and seventh-grader Collin Murphy went 1-0. Eighth-grader Chris Dickle went 1-1.
“It was nice to wrestle some new competition, and we held our own against them,” Ellingson said.
Ten Demons will continue to wrestle this Sunday when they travel to Oskaloosa for AAU districts. The top four wrestlers in each weight class move on to the state tournament in Des Moines.
