Washington woman’s legacy
Rosemary Harris portrayed Ola Babcock Miller during History Day of the 175th Anniversary Celebration, Monday afternoon. Miller was born March 1, 1871, on a farm in rural Washington County. Her family moved to the city of Washington when she was 5.
Miller served as Iowa’s Secretary of State in the 1930s. She was the first woman to do so. She also started the Iowa State Patrol in an effort to make Iowa’s roads safer. In 1975, Miller was the first woman inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame, and in 1999, the Old Historical Building in Des Moines was named the Ola Babcock Miller Office Building.
