Washington wrestlers are the ‘cream of the crop’ at Corn Cob Nationals
DES MOINES – Ten Washington wrestlers participated in the Corn Cob Nationals tournament at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, March 15 and Sunday, March 16. Five of the 10 wrestlers were able to place in their divisions.
In the 6-years-old and under division, Caden Greiner took third place out of 17 wrestlers at 50 pounds. After a first-round bye, he won his first two matches 4-2 and 4-1 Greiner lost his third match by way of a pin then went on to win his fourth and fifth matches 9-0 and 4-1 Brawk Sterna and Jacob Libe also participated in the 6-and-under division.
DaShaun Westphal took second place out of three wrestlers at 120 pounds in the 7-and-8-year-old division. Westphal lost his first bout 9-4, then won by fall in 0:47.
In the 11-and-12-year-old division, Tristin Westphal took second place out of seven competitors at 135 pounds. T. Westphal got a pin in his first match, won his second with a 14 – 0 decision and then got pinned in the finals.
Ben Bohr took fifth place out of eight wrestlers in the 80-pound bracket for the 13-and-14-year-old division. Bohr won his first match 7 – 1, came up on the short end of a 4 – 0 decision in the second, fell 5 – 3 in the next match then got a forfeit to secure his placement. David Hora and Kiowa Keith also represented Washington in the 13-14-year-old division.
Schyler Sterna was the runner-up out of 12 wrestlers in the 19-years-and-older division. Sterna won by pin the first two rounds and got a 16-11 decision to proceed to the finals. He was pinned in the finals to come up just short of a title.
Brody Warth was also in the bracket for the 19-and-older division.
