Water Sharks take third in Cedar Rapids
CEDAR RAPIDS — The Washington Community Y Water Sharks swim team took third place out of four teams at a meet at the Helen G. Nassif YMCA in Cedar Rapids on Saturday.
The host Cedar Rapids Sharks rolled to victory with 5,399.5 points, and the Walnut Creek Dolphins from Des Moines took second with 2,769 points. The Water Sharks were third with 1,340.5 points, and the Black Hawk County Pirates were fourth with 1,183 points.
The Water Sharks won three events on the day. Allison Vogel won the 50 free in the girls’ 11-12 age group in 29.70 seconds, and she also took second in the 100 free in 1:08.47 and third in the 50 butterfly in 33.84 seconds. Kayla Andrew won the 50 breaststroke in the girls’ 11-12 age group in 38.84 seconds, and she finished second to Vogel in the 50 free in 30.09 seconds. Vogel and Andrew were also members of the 200 free relay team, which also included Peyton Read and Cierra Miller, that took third place in 2:09.43.
Alijah Beatty won the 400 individual medley in the girls’ 12-21 age group in 5:59.87, took second in the 100 butterfly in 1:14.66, and was second in the 500 free in 6:34.09. She also was a member of the 15-21 200 medley relay team, which also included Alexis Read, Emily Adam and Lyndsay Adrian, that finished third in 2:11.63.
Alexis Read took second place in the 100 back in the girls’ 13-14 age group in 1:13.05, and Alexis Rodgers took second in the 200 free in 2:30.67. Adam finished third in the 100 breaststroke in the girls’ 15-21 age group in 1:20.83, and she was third in the 200 individual medley in the girls’ 12-21 division in 2:43.60.
Audrey Wubbena took second place in the 50 back in the girls’ 11-12 age group in 36.57 seconds, and Peyton Read finished third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:29.02. Gabriella Anderson took third place in the 50 breaststroke in the girls’ 9-10 age group in 47.53 seconds.
Michael Kimball finished third in both the 100 individual medley (1:24.95) and the 100 breaststroke (1:36.44) in the boys’ 11-12 age group. Owen Horak took third place in the 200 free in the boys’ 13-14 age group in 2:37.91. Both Kimball and Horak, along with Zachariah Parsons and Mitchell Driscoll, were members of the 13-14 200 medley relay team that took second place in 2:46.21.
Reece Mayer took third place the 50 free (33.84), 50 butterfly (45.12) and the 100 free (1:23.17) in the boys’ 9-10 age group.
The Water Sharks have a meet at the Fairfield Rec Center this Saturday, taking on teams from Ottumwa, Ankeny, Marion and Rathbun. The meet will begin at 9 a.m.
