The Germanville Walnut No. 5 country school reunion was held April 20, 2013, at Jerry’s Restaurant in Mt. Pleasant. The afternoon was spent visiting about all the memories of kindergarten through eighth-grade school years.

Twenty-five classmates and their spouses attended: Maynard Craff of East Alton, Ill.; Roger Bekel of Moline, Ill.; Dennis Hoefer of Marietta, Ga.; Pat (Kurtz) Randall of Coralville; Iva (Reighard) Burkett and Karen (Tagluer) Alderman of Iowa City; Jeri (Kurtz) Powers of Fort Madison; Wayne Reighard and Carroll Reighard of Washington; Elaine (Bekel) Watson of Richland; Jim Kurtz and Cedra (Houseal) Schlatter of Mt. Pleasant; Ron Taglauer and Marilyn (Bekel) McGuire of Fairfield; Richard Taglauer and Ruth (Diers) Rhoades of Wayland; Harlan Craff, Gary Houseal, Roy Anderson, Elaine Anderson, Kathleen Anderson, Phyllis (Anderson) Hird, Marilyn (Hoyle) Martin, Kathryn (Hoyle) Newman and Kenneth Humston of Brighton.

A reunion will be held next year on April 12, 2014, at the Community Center in the City Hall building in Wayland.

The community of Wayland was reeling in shock Monday morning with the news of the death of native son Bob Mattocks. Bob was killed in a motor vehicle accident Monday morning, May 13, at intersection of Franklin Avenue and Old Hwy 34. No other details were available Monday.

The board of directors of the Wayland Economic Development Corporation will host its annual Memorial Day Breakfast fundraiser beginning at 6:30 a.m. Monday, May 27, in the community room in the city hall building at 218 W. Main St. They will be serving up pancakes and eggs, whole hog sausage and drinks. All proceeds will go toward the new Industrial Park-East start-up fund.
