Weekend sports roundup: Mid-Prairie in regional finals
The Mid-Prairie girls’ softball team cruised to another playoff victory on Friday night, dispatching Williamsburg 8-1.
The Golden Hawks have now won their two playoff games by a combined score of 19-2, but face a tough test on Monday night in Iowa City.
Mid-Prairie racked up 10 hits, led by Alex Rath’s 3-for-4 night at the plate.
Rath also picked up an RBI and a run while stealing two bases.
Amber Kral led the Hawks with a two-RBI performance in the game.
In the regional final, Mid-Priarie will face No.1 ranked Benton with a trip to the state tournament on the line.
Benton has won 28 straight games going into Monday night’s final and is led by three different players batting over .400.
The game will begin at 7 p.m.
Mid-Prairie dropped their district game on Saturday to Iowa City Regina.
Regina scored 11 runs combined in the third and fourth innings, and withstood a five-run fifth from the Hawks to win 16-6 in five innings.
Mid-Prairie tallied seven hits in the contest, with only three of their six runs being earned, but defenisvely gave up 16 hits.
The loss ends the season for Mid-Prairie.
The Wildcats ended their season on Saturday, dropping their district contest against West Burlington 7-2.
Columbus picked up four hits and drew five walks in the contest, led by Tucker Morrison who drew two walks, stole a base and accounted for the only Wildcat RBI of the game.
Richard Rivers went 1-for-3 in the game, scoring a run and stealing two bases, while Eli Sents went 1-for-3 and picked up the other Columbus run.
On the mound, Mitchell Griffin threw six innings, striking out three and giving up four earned runs.
