In July, Bryce and Drew West added another notch to already illustrious careers.
The twins, who wrestle at Highland in the winter, participated in the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships in Fargo, N.D., over the week of July 21-25, where both of the rising sophomores finished second in the Greco-Roman competition.
Drew participated in the 106 weight class for Greco Roman competition while Bryce was in the 113 weight class in the same style.
Both participated in the 113 weight class in the Freestyle event in Fargo, with Bryce placing fourth.
Their coach at Highland called this meet one of the “premier wrestling tournaments of the year.”
“I think this gives them quite a bit of momentum,” Highland wrestling coach Clint Jones said. “It’s a guage as to where they are and also as to aspects of the sport where they may need to improve as well. They got to see where they are against their peers and it’s an excellent accomplishment. They aren’t going to just rest on this. That next Monday, they were in the weight room, so I think this really motivated them.”
As freshmen last winter, both finished near the top of the state, with Drew putting together a 50-0 record and claiming the 106-pound state championship. Bryce finished 48-2 over the course of the 2013-14 season and a third-place finish in the 113-pound competition.
Bryce’s only loss at the state tournament was to the eventual state champion.
“(The national tournament) felt good and it gets me ready and farther than some of the kids in the offseason,” Bryce said. “It improves me in every way, and my shots have gotten a lot better and everything all around. These are nationally ranked kids throughout the nation.”
Bryce and Drew have been spending the offseason training at the Eastern Iowa Hawkeye wrestling club, and both are looking to claim championships in their sophomore years at Highland.
