West Chester UMW
Eight members of the West Chester United Methodist Women met June 12 for a visit to the Matthew 25 Center in Cedar Rapids.
Pastor Jerry Oakland greeted them, showed them around the Center, and explained what the Center does for the community. Personnel and volunteers at the Center distribute garden produce to the area people, plant and maintain gardens, and provide a room where area youth and young adults can gather for movies, music, etc.
The Center is located in the flood zone, where homes were destroyed and some homes were demolished. The gardens are located in this area and around Harrison School. Volunteers maintain the gardens with the help of the youth. The job for the UMW group was to prepare vegetables for distribution the next day. The vegetables had been picked the day before and refrigerated.
The women ate lunch in Cedar Rapids before returning home. Everyone agreed it was a worthwhile day.
The next meeting will be Sept. 11 at the church.
