What Resurrection Day is all about

By Pastor Dean Elmore, Washington Church of God | Apr 07, 2017

Praise God! What a wonderful time of the year, “Spring,” when we celebrate the newness of life. Flowers and grass springing up, birds coming back, animals bringing forth their new young ones. A time when we come out of the coldness and darkness of winter into the time of a new season, a new beginning, new life, new hope! Summertime! Joyous time!

This coming week we will celebrate the wonders and love of our Heavenly Father as we see His love for us demonstrated as He sent His only begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, to take the penalty of our sins for us, and set us free from the curse of sin that we might have life and have it abundantly. The Bible says (Romans 3:23), “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” The Bible also says (Romans 6:23), “For the wages of sin is death.” Death, being eternally separated from God, and the blessings that we can have with Him and then physical death. This is the penalty that Jesus paid for us that we might be free from the law of sin and death. Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” His agony and the pain that He suffered before and while He was nailed to the Cross, speak of the awful price of sin and the suffering that it brings. But it didn’t stop there.

The Bible tells us that on the first day of the week, after He had been crucified, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb where they had put Jesus and found the stone covering the entrance had been rolled away and the tomb empty. She looked into the tomb and saw two angels sitting where Jesus had been laid, but He was not there. A little later Jesus appeared to her in person. After that He appeared to Peter, to His other disciples, and then to more than 500 people. His resurrection from the dead showed the mighty power of God. It also showed the reality of who Jesus really is, the One and only begotten Son of the Living God! His body was raised a new body, a glorious body, the same which is promised for all that will believe and put their faith and hope in Him. The real hope that we can have. This is the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

He came as a babe in a manger. He walked this earth as a man. He spoke and lived the truth. He was crucified, He was buried, but on the third day, He arose from the dead with a new and glorious body and is seated today at the right hand of the Father, speaking to Him for us, and then one of these days Jesus is coming back to take all those who put their faith and trust in Him to be with Him forever! This is what Resurrection Day is all about. It is not about Easter bunnies, Easter eggs, or the other things that we have substituted for the wonders of God’s love. Think on these things. My prayer is that we will truly see and know the wonders of God’s love as we celebrate Resurrection Day! As the Apostle Paul prayed, “that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height — to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you might be filled with all the fullness of God.”
