Woman to speak to about sexualized violence
J-POG, Just Peace Outreach Group, invites community members to hear Rachel Halder talk about what she is doing to keep people from ignoring sexual violence. Sexualized violence touches everyone but it’s a subject that is typically avoided, especially within religious circles. Halder is not being silent about sexual aggression or abuse, though. She is working to collect stories of Mennonite (or previously identified Mennonite) women who have experienced sexual assault or abuse. She has created Our Stories Untold, a Web site that serves as a place to provoke conversation about sexualized violence. Entries are a mix of personal experiences, reflections, rape culture definitions, discussion and current events in our world dealing with sexual abuse.
Halder is a 2006 graduate from Iowa Mennonite School and a 2010 graduate from Goshen College, Goshen, Ind. Upon graduating from college she worked a year at a women's empowerment center in Papua, Indonesia, through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC). She currently lives in Solon and works remotely as the social media associate for Women Under Siege, a project of the Women’s Media Center in New York City, which documents how sexualized violence is used as a weapon of genocide in conflicts.
Join J-POG in welcoming Rachel Halder on Sunday April 28. Informal discussion and finger-foods potluck (bring your own table service) begins at 6 p.m. at Wellman Mennonite Church, 1215 Eighth Ave. in Wellman. Halder will speak at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come and bring your questions.
