Young players help 'Cats win at Lone Tree
LONE TREE — Freshmen Derik Chandler and Laura Mincks knocked down some pressure-packed free throws in the closing two minutes of Monday’s Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Division game at Lone Tree to help Columbus hold off the Lions for a 45-42 win.
Junior point guard Martha Anaya went down with an injury in the second quarter, and seniors Shelly Stewart and Megan Pretz fouled out late in the game, so the Wildcats finished the game with two freshmen, two sophomores and a senior on the floor.
“Last night should be a huge confidence booster for our young kids,” Columbus head coach Nathan Carlson said. “The young kids were put in pressure-packed situations and stepped up.”
Pretz had a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Wildcats (4-5, 4-5 SEISC North), and sophomore Kelsey Pretz added 14 points. Sophomore Claire Hamilton, who filled in for Anaya at point guard, finished with six points.
Senior Avery Edwards scored 15 points to lead Lone Tree (4-6, 4-6 SEISC North). Juniors Abbie Schmidt and Madelyn Flemr added eight points apiece.
