Youngquist to perform in Cedar Rapids
A Washington native will be performing again in Iowa next week.
Heather Youngquist, daughter of Robert and Millie Youngquist, will be performing with the Cedar Rapids June 19 – 21 at Brucemore on the Lawn. She will be playing the role of Yum Yum in The Mikado.
Music has always been a part of Heather’s life.
“In high school we didn’t perform any operas, so I sang in a lot of musicals and played in the band,” she said. “My dad was the choir director when I was a student at the high school, which was nice, because I was really close to my mentor.”
While she was a student at the University of Iowa, Heather performed in her first opera. She majored in music with an emphasis in opera.
After she graduated in 2005, she decided to continue studying opera and went to the University of Indiana.
“The University of Indiana has a huge opera school, and this is where a lot of my performing opportunities occurred,” Heather said.
Some of the operas she has performed in include playing Lucia in “Lucia di Lammermoor” by Donizette, “Marguerite” in Faust by Gounod, and Marschallin in “Der Rosenkavalier,” by Strauss.
Her chance to come back to Iowa to perform came last fall. Heather said she noticed the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre was having auditions. She had performed with them in the past and decided to give it a try.
“I was cast as an understudy, or what we call in the opera world cover in another opera they were doing,” Heather said. “They must have like what I did because I went back to Chicago and received an e-mail from them offering me the role of Yum Yum in ‘Mikado.’ ”
She is excited to get back to her home state to perform because this will allow her friends and family in Iowa to see her perform, she said.
