Traffic accident

A caller Monday morning at Orville Yoder Turnpike and 470th Street in Kalona reported an accident with unknown injuries. The vehicle was on its top. The caller was unsure if it was occupied, and requested Kalona QRS. Kalona Fire responded and discontinued Kalona QRS since no one was inside the vehicle and officers had tagged the vehicle earlier.

A caller Monday morning at 295th Street and Redwood Avenue in Washington reported that she was in the ditch with her children in her 2015 Dodge Journey. An officer and a towing service both responded. The vehicle was down a Level B road, and it could not be accessed that day. They assisted in getting the family a ride home. The towing company planned to pull the vehicle out later, and she was given a warning about driving there. Damage was under $1,500. The vehicle just slid into the ditch.

A caller Monday night in the 1200 block of Highway 218 in Riverside reported he was on the southbound side of Highway 218 in the ditch south of Riverside. There were no injuries. The vehicle was well into the ditch. An officer and a towing service responded. The vehicle was towed out and was drivable. A state accident report was given to the caller.

Traffic stop serious

An officer reported being on a vehicle stop, Monday morning in the 2400 block of Highway 92 in Washington. Ledaniel Gregory Moore, 28, of Keota, was cited for driving under suspension. Bianca Rachel Smallwood, 25, of Keota, was cited at the same time and location for no proof of insurance. Both subjects were advised that they were no longer welcome in the store.

Traffic other

An officer responded Monday morning to a voice mail message left for the Police Department on Saturday, stating that a van had been parked in front of his residence in the 1100 block of East Third Street in Washington for nearly a week. The vehicle was parked almost in his yard. The officer chalked the tires.

Fire calls

A caller Monday morning in the 1200 block of Riverside Road in Riverside reported smoke inside the building and an electrical hot wire smell. Three subjects were inside and were going to evacuate. Riverside Fire and Kalona Fire responded. Ainsworth Fire was en route and disregarded by Riverside Fire. Alliant Energy was notified. An outlet had caught on fire.

Animal complaint

A caller Monday evening in the 400 block of South Avenue B in Washington reported that a male subject was walking past with a dog on a leash, and the dog got loose and bit the caller’s mother on the arm. It was determined that the dog was a puppy and was not vicious. The tooth scratched the female subject. The dog did have shots, with the expiration date of Feb. 2, 2019. A report will be filed.

A caller Monday night at Highway 78 and Cedar Avenue in Brighton reported a dead deer in the roadway. An officer responded and removed the deer out of the roadway.

Drug/narcotics violation

An officer reported being out with a missing juvenile, Monday night in the 100 block of South Sixth Street in Kalona. The juvenile was transported by the deputy back to the residence. Charges will be filed for possession of controlled substance – marijuana, and first-offense possession of tobacco.


A caller Monday morning in the 500 block of North Iowa Avenue reported being defrauded by a subject in the jurisdiction. A $1,000 money order was sent for a shotgun. The money order was cashed, and the caller did not receive the item. Other buyers on the website had had the same problem. An officer spoke with the caller.


A caller Monday morning in the 200 block of A Avenue in Kalona reported that while he was walking his dog, another subject in the neighborhood swung a two-by-four at him. An officer spoke with the caller, who stated the two-by-four was not swung at him but instead in the air, and foul language was used at him. The caller requested documentation of the incident.

A caller Monday morning in the 100 block of East Madison Street in Brighton reported being threatened via email by her ex-boyfriend. An officer spoke with both parties. The male subject was asked to have no further contact with the caller.

Runaways/missing person

A caller Monday afternoon in the 400 block of E Avenue in Kalona reported her son was on probation and was last seen Friday night. He came home at some point on Sunday, although she did not see him. An officer spoke to the caller, who agreed to meet with him at about 5:45 p.m. to fill out a guarantee of transport form. An officer located the juvenile in the Kalona area at a residence, and he was returned home.

Suspicious activity

A caller Monday morning in the 2400 block of Highway 92 in Washington reported four suspicious subjects at the store for the past three to four hours. Two were still in the store, and two were outside in the parking lot by a white SUV. Five officers responded. The subjects were advised they were no longer allowed in the store.

A caller Monday afternoon in the 3100 block of Highway 22 in Riverside reported a male subject had been sitting in a black four-door Mitsubishi for the past hour. An officer was en route and advised that the vehicle left westbound on Highway 22. The officer checked the area and was unable to locate the vehicle.

A caller Monday night in the 700 block of C Avenue in Kalona reported that someone kept calling her phone. An officer responded. She was having phone issues. Everything should be fine.


An officer reported being out with a vehicle, Monday morning in the 1900 block of East Washington Street in Washington.  The subject had been involved in suspicious activity at a store earlier that morning, and was advised she was no longer welcome at the store.

Welfare check

A caller Monday afternoon in the 800 block of South 12th Avenue in Washington requested a welfare check. The subject had not checked her mail in a few days and it was stacking up. An officer responded. Contact was made. There was no problem.

A caller Monday afternoon in the 1400 block of Orange Avenue in Kalona requested a welfare check on a subject. An officer responded and made contact with the subject.

All other theft

A caller Monday morning in the 500 block of Highway 1 in Washington reported theft by a bad check in the amount of $1,200. An officer responded. A report will be filed.

A caller Monday afternoon in the 300 block of North Fourth Avenue in Washington reported a men’s 26-inch bicycle was stolen from the bar the previous night at 5 p.m. An officer responded to speak with the owner and received a photo of the bike, and advised that he was going to attempt to locate it.
