The 2017 Student Achievement Awards Banquet was held Wednesday evening at the Washington High School. More than 100 students and parents were registered.

This awards celebration was sponsored by the local Optimist Club. Each year teachers are asked to look for students who go above and beyond, doing things that might get unnoticed but might be used to exemplify a student’s character and abilities. Throughout the year these are compiled; and from these, students are selected to receive an award to be presented at the annual banquet.

The keynote speaker was Dr. Mike Jorgensen, semi-retired Washington superintendent. He challenged the students to proceed with their life even if they didn’t have a clear-cut direction for their life at this point in time.

Other awards were issued to outstanding students, as follows: Band — Jessie Buchholz; Choir — Andrea Pingol; Drama — Michael Dillon; Speech — Kyle Schindler. An award was also granted for “Student of the Year,” which went to Lindsay Hippen.

So many students may not be the school athlete or outstanding personality, but this awards banquet is designed to honor those students who still need recognition for their everyday character skills.

Principal Erik Buchholz has put this event together for the past several years.
