RIVERSIDE—Next weekend will be a big anniversary for Trek Fest.
“This is the 30th anniversary,” said Mike Meinders, president of Riverside Area Community Club, which puts on the celebration each year.
The theme for this year’s Trek Fest will be “Generations,” Meinders said. The idea for this year’s theme came from one of the Star Trek movies where Captain Jean Luc Picard travels back in time to meet Captain James T. Kirk.
“I’m hoping to get a big draw this year,” Meinders said. “I would like to see 5,000 people come but think it will be more like 1,000 to 2,000.”
Meinders said there has been a lot of interest shown in this year’s Trek Fest.
“We’ve had a lot of people coming in thinking Trek Fest was this week, but it’s not—it’s next week,” he said.
Activities for Trek Fest begin next Friday evening with a carnival in Hall Park at 5 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. a kids’ parade will be held and live music performed by Bob Black and Bandjoy on the main stage in Hall Park.
A new event will also take place Friday evening before the demolition derby.
“We’ll have a demolition lawn mower derby,” Meiders said. “This will be held probably before the demolition derby at 7:30 p.m. at the south side of Hall Park.”
Friday night will also mark the appearance of the band called “Garage Brothers from Another Planet” at Murphy’s. Robert O’ Reilly and JG Hertzler, who played Chancellor Gowron, and General Martok, are in this band. They will begin playing at 9 p.m.
On Saturday, things begin with the parade at 10 a.m. where General Martok and Chancellor Gowron will be making their appearances.

"Rain or shine the parade will be held,” Meinders said.
Professional makeup artist John Paladin will also appear alongside Martok and Gowron on Saturday. Paladin has been employed as a professional makeup artist for O’Reilly and Hertzler for several years and has worked on many of the Star Trek series.
After the parade a sci-fi swap meet will be held in Hall Park beginning at 11 a.m. Tom and the Tribbles will play music on the main stage from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and then the costume contest will be held at 1 p.m.
At 2:30 p.m. the Lone Tree garden tractor pullers club will host a tractor pull and at 3 p.m. the Bill Riley talent show will be held.
At 4 p.m. a meet and greet with O’Reilly and Hertzler will be held at Riverside City Hall. Limited seating is available and there is a small fee for the meet and greet, Meinders said.
“During the meet and greet, someone will be picked to have makeup done by Paladin,” Meinders said. “O’Reilly and Hertzler may appear in costume during the meet and greet, too.”
Saturday night live music from Porch Builders will be played from 7 to 11 p.m. and a fireworks show at 10 p.m. by Stumptown Shooters.
