4-H Clover Cookers Club cook a meal

Feb 22, 2018

Washington County 4-H was excited to add a new speciality club this year called the 4-H Clover Cookers Club. This group is learning about kitchen safety, healthy food substitutions, reading recipes, accurate measuring, and this past weekend they focused on hosting and serving others at their Family Valentine Dinner.

The group sent special invitations, collected RSVPs, prepared the spaghetti and meatball dinner, and then served their special guests. Over 50 enjoyed the special meal together. A priority topic of 4-H is healthy living and this club is giving its members the opportunity to do, reflect and apply what they are learning and also share with their own families. This February meeting they focused on serving others, hosting, planning a meal and working with meat. They learned about mixing ingredients with meat and also appropriate temperatures for safe consumption.

4-H leader Ruchel Hiller approached Washington County 4-H about adding this special club. “I wanted to start the club because I know that family life has changed so much. In many households both parents work, and less time is spent in the kitchen learning the basics,” said Hiller. “I want them to feel confident that they can go into the kitchen and make themselves or their family a snack/meal.”

The Clover Cookers will meet again in April and June.

“It was fun to be a part of this special event,” said Amy Green, Washington County 4-H/Youth Coordinator. “It was obvious to see the pride the 4-Hers had when seating their guests and serving them this meal. It was fun to listen to their conversations about what parts of the meal they contributed to.”
