4-H club serves at Saturday Kitchen

Apr 11, 2018

The Prairie Pride 4-H Club recently put several key 4-H pieces together to positively impact Washington residents. They partnered with other groups with similar goals. They used their own knowledge of food preparation and meal planning to prepare a healthy meal. Prairie Pride 4-H members put their hands to larger service by planning and serving the April 7 Saturday Kitchen where they served 75 guests and packaged an additional 50 takeout meals.

Saturday Kitchen is offered every week at UP Church in Washington. It is hosted by a rotation of six local churches and several community organizations. Each hosting group plans its own menu, purchases, prepares, and serves the meal, and cleans up after the event.

Prairie Pride club volunteer April Cuddeback was proud of the members’ interest to take on this new community service activity. “Prairie Pride felt this was a way that we could serve our community that gives so much back to us as individuals and as 4-H’ers. We had 20 club members and parents serve on Saturday with other club members donating food items as well.”

Community service is a priority topic of Iowa 4-H who recognizes the valuable impact youth can make on a community. Cuddeback and Megan Scheibel are the volunteer leaders for the Prairie Pride 4-H. Washington County 4-H has 18 clubs around the county. If interested in helping with this growing program as a volunteer, please contact Amy at the Washington County Extension office at 319-653-4811.
