4-H & FFA Market Beef Weigh-In set for Dec. 14

Nov 26, 2013

4-H & FFA beef project members are reminded of the Market Beef Weigh-In to be held Saturday, Dec. 14, from 8:30 a.m. until noon at the Kalona Sale Barn.

Ten calves may be weighed in for the county fair and out-of-county events. Last year’s bucket-bottle calves must also weigh in to be shown in the market beef class for 2014. Those returning bucket-bottle calves are included in the maximum of 10 head that may be weighed in. Please Note: Any bucket-bottle calf project shown the previous year (2013) and weighed in for the current year (2014) is eligible to be entered in the Market Beef class or the Dairy Steer class for the 2014 County Fair.

Breeding Heifers do not need to be weighed.

Required information for purebred calves being nominated for Iowa State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben: breed, sire name, sire registration and tattoo.

Required information for purebred market calves for county fair ONLY: breed, signed affidavit from the producer, verifying this calf could be registered OR registration papers.

For County Fair ONLY exhibitors are not required to register the steer with the breed association to show in a purebred class. If not registered with the association, a copy of proper documentation based on the breed must be brought to weigh-in along with an affidavit signed by the producer verifying that the animal could be registered. Documentation requirements and affidavits can be obtained from the Extension Office.

If the above information is not provided at the December weigh-in, it will be assumed the calf is a crossbred.

There will be an ear tag fee for all beef. Washington County will do retinal scanning for those nominating for the State Fair. There is a fee for each calf nominated for State Fair. Ak-Sar-Ben will require DNA samples and a fee. Bring money to pay all fees on Dec. 14. Any out-of-county 4-H’ers will be charged an additional fee for State Fair, Ak-Sar-Ben and for county-only shown calves. Please contact the Washington County Extension Office ahead of time if you will be attending from a neighboring county 4-H program. Revalor XS (200 day implant) will be available and implanted for a fee upon request.

Please arrive at your own convenience between 8:30 and 11:30 a.m.
