4-H/FFA production barrow weigh-in planned

The Washington County Fair Swine Committee will again offer a production barrow division for the 2013 Washington County Fair. Participation in the production barrow division is optional for all exhibitors.

Production Barrow Division Guidelines for 2013 Washington County Fair

A) Exhibitors may nominate a maximum of six barrows at the production weigh-in on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at the Washington County Fairgrounds from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Pigs entered in the production division must be weighed and tagged by committee during the Saturday weigh-in.

B) No barrows over 45 pounds at weigh-in will be accepted. Pigs must be ear-notched and castrated prior to weigh-in (no exceptions).

C) The swine committee will strictly enforce the market weight range of 220-290 pounds for all market swine entries; exception is that production barrows will be allowed to surpass the 290-pound maximum and still be eligible for class entry and show due to the rate-of-gain feature in production divisions.

The 2013 Iowa State Fair 4-H Swine Show will have some major changes occur. After much discussion and careful consideration the Iowa 4-H Program will discontinue the 4-H Derby Swine Show at the Iowa State Fair starting in 2013. The Iowa 4-H program is reviewing all its activities and events to ensure our resources are aligned with the greatest possible impact on youth. In the future, the goal is to design and offer curriculum, educational materials and events that best utilize staff time and result in youth gaining the knowledge and experience needed to be successful adults.

With this change, there will be no regional State Fair swine weigh-ins that typically occur near the end of April. Instead, all State Fair swine ID will happen at the county level. Information will be sent to swine families soon with these changes or people may call the Extension Office for more information about the ISF swine nomination process.
