Airsoft gun found at Lincoln Elementary

Lincoln School officials reported Wednesday afternoon confiscating a look alike Airsoft gun from a student on one of the buses during the early dismissal.

According to a release from the school, the investigation into the situation is still underway. The release said that no threats had been made, but that the Airsoft gun was shown to other students. The release said the district takes this very seriously and all personnel involved followed protocol.

“We take it very seriously and our top priority is safety for all students,” Washington Schools Superintendent Jeff Dicks said. “That is why there is no second guessing when we see something like that. Our school personnel did an outstanding job. Once they became aware, it was handled imnmediately.”

Dicks said the Airsoft gun confiscated was a pistol. Airsoft guns are also made in forms to simulate rifles, submachineguns and shotguns. He said when district officials see something that resembles a gun, they always treat the situation as though it is really a gun. He said anything that looks like a gun is not acceptible in the school district. He also classified the gun as a “toy,” but said that toys aren’t allowed in the school.

He declined comment on what kind of punishment the student could face, saying it is confidential.

Airsoft guns are replica guns used in Airsoft sports. They are low-powered smooth bore air guns designed to shoot non-metallic spherical projectiles. Although generally made of plastic, the guns can be designed to be highly detailed replicas of real guns and can be difficult to distinguish from the real thing, including having working actions. Generally, Airsoft guns come with an orange tip on the barrel to distinguish them from real guns, although this is not required by law. Under Iowa law, they are not considered dangerous weapons. Airsoft guns cannot be modified to chamber live ammunition. There have been several incidents nationwide where people have been shot by law enforcement while in possession of Airsoft guns.

There have also been many instances nationwide where students have brought Airsoft guns to school. In some of the cases, criminal charges have been filed against the students.
