Area weekend baseball playoff preview

By Aaron Viner | Jul 11, 2014

Over the course of Saturday and Tuesday, four area teams will be involved in the district playoffs for baseball, with the only team not involved being Washington (they begin playoffs next Friday at Benton).
Here’s a brief look at the games and the teams’ opponents.
The Golden Hawks will play on Saturday against Iowa City Regina, in Mount Vernon.
The teams played each other early in the season, during a doubleheader in Wellman where Regina swept Mid-Prairie 6-0, 15-0.
Mid-Prairie will need its leading hitter, Carson Gingerich (.372 average), to get things started for the Golden Hawks to turn things around.
If Mid-Prairie wins, they will face Alburnett in Mount Vernon on Tuesday.
The Wildcats are at 2-19 on the year with their only wins coming against WACO, while their opponent West Burlington holds a 12-13 record and has lost four of its last five games.
The winner of this game will face Central Lee-Donnellson on Tuesday.
The Huskies have picked up a 17-12 record this season, and are currently riding a hot streak heading into the playoffs, winning five of their last seven games.
The two losses came against Clear Creek Amana in extra innings and against Van Buren, the No. 3 team in the state.
Highland will face Springville (16-11) on Tuesday night in Lisbon. The winner of that game will face the winner of  Lisbon and Bellevue.
Iowa Mennonite
IMS (10-15) will take on English Valleys (10-11) in Pekin on Tuesday night, and if they advance will most likely face Pekin High School in the next round.
Both teams come into the game having lost four of their last five games.
