At the library

By Amanda Smith | Jul 31, 2017

Two years ago, when I started working at the Washington Public Library, I wasn’t quite sure what a library assistant job would entail. ure, I had a basic description of what my typical duties would be, but now that I’ve spent four nights each week behind the desk I’ve come to realize that this job can’t accurately be put down on paper. A few things I have been able to add to my résumé include: smelling the fresh cut flowers weekly that a patron brings us; taste testing cookies after helping someone find the perfect recipe on the internet; rounding up all in the building, and on the sidewalk, during a tornado warning twice in one evening; marveling at the submissions each year for the Festival of Pumpkins; describing what a caucus is over the phone to curious callers; helping an author get not 1 or 2 books written, but 3 - and published, I might add!; and welcoming Washington’s newest residents as they come in looking for information about their new town.

Unfortunately, these duties will not be mine much longer. Bittersweetly, I must say that I will not be a regular at the library anymore. It has been my pleasure serving the community of Washington, our neighbors, and the new friends that come in from around the world. When I think back on the last two years the word that comes to mind is thankful. I have thoroughly enjoyed this job, and those who have made it what it is.

These are the new materials available at the library this week.
