At the library

By Allie Paarsmith | Aug 08, 2018

The Adult Summer Reading Program was a big hit!

We had over 30 reading logs turned in. Prizes have been drawn and we are currently contacting our prize winners.

I would also like to thank our prize donors as well: JP’s 207, Washington Concert Association, Café Dodici, State Theater, and Kendon Hanson. You are all amazing people and organizations and you make me proud to be part of this community.

I would like to give a huge thank you to Hy-Vee for donating 50 lbs of pork for Allie’s Alley Party. We wouldn’t have been able to throw the party without such a generous donation. The party was a huge success! 55 people came out to support our library and to celebrate adults reading!

We focus a lot on keeping kids reading throughout the summer to prevent learning loss, but we can’t forget that our goal is to create lifelong learners!

We have to support reading and learning throughout a patron’s life, not just while they’re getting a formal education. We will definitely be continuing with the Adult Summer Reading Program next year, and we hope to have another party in our beautiful alley.

Our only program for adults this month will be Brown Bags & Books on August 14 at noon. Bring your lunch and enjoy the stories of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings as read by our own Mimi Jacoby.

Other than that, August will be fairly quiet for adult programming, so that I can get everything planned for fall. On September 11 at 10am we will have Linda McCann here to speak about her book Civilian Conservation Corps in Southeast Iowa.

I will also be starting a nonfiction and a fiction book club! They will meet alternating months on the third Monday at 6pm and the third Tuesday at noon.

Keep an eye out later this month for our reading lineup! We will be offering free interlibrary loans for any of our book club selections.
