Bennett to perform Oct. 1

Sep 21, 2017

Washington High School graduate, Alyssa Bennett, now of Chicago, Illinois, is an accomplished vocal solo performer and college vocal instructor. Alyssa returns to Washington on Sunday, Oct. 1, to perform in the Washington Area Performing Arts and Events Center as part of a three-woman show, The Three Iowa Sopranos.

Bennett is extremely grateful to have been raised in an environment so supportive of the arts as Washington. She got her start at seven years old as Gretl in The Y’s Men’s production of “The Sound of Music” and continued to perform in school and community until her graduation from Washington High School in 1996. Along the way, Alyssa had the opportunity to play the roles of Amaryllis in “The Music Man,” Bet in “Oliver,” Julie in “Carousel (WHS),” Helen Keller in “The Miracle Worker (WHS),” and return in 2000 to play Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz. “Other treasured experiences include singing in the Hi-Fi’s, Washington Community Choir, and Iowa All-State Chorus; playing bass and singing with the WHS Jazz Band; and performing as a jazz-singing waitress at the beloved Home of the Tubador. Bennett went on to earn her Bachelors of Art in music at Luther College and Masters degree in voice and opera at Northwestern University.

Bennett has enjoyed a varied performing career in Chicago, and also internationally as featured soprano soloist and United States cultural emissary, singing concerts of American music and giving master classes in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. Bennett also performs as chorus member and soloist with Music of the Baroque and Grant Park Music Festival, and teaches voice at Lake Forest College and The Chicago Academy for the Arts.

Additional highlights on the stage include varied performances with the Chicago’s Grant Park Music Festival Orchestra, the Apollo Chorus of Chicago & Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra, the Northshore Chamber Orchestra, the Milwaukee Opera Theatre, the Cleveland Composers Guild, and the Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble.

The other members of The Three Iowa Sopranos are Heather Youngquist and Emily Jewell. This trio assembled especially for WAPAEC since all three women are WHS alumnae. All three are accomplished, professional vocalists. Their music for this event will consist of a variety of styles and genres.

Bennett is the daughter of Doug and Bonnie Moothart of Washington, and Richard Bennett of Urbandale. Emily is the daughter of Mike and Debbie Jewell of Washington. Heather is the daughter of Bob and Millie Youngquist of Washington.
