Century Farm honored

Aug 18, 2014

Shirley Pfeifer of Washington and her brother, Mark Soeth, attended the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines on Tuesday, Aug. 12, to receive a sign and certificates recognizing their grandparents’ farm as a Century Farm.

To receive this award, the farm must contain at least 40 acres which have been in the same family for 100 years. This 160-acre farm is located in Emmet County and was bought by M.L. Soeth in 1912. The family, with all their belongings, moved by train from Buena Vista County to Wallingford in Emmet County in 1913.

The recognition of both Century and Heritage farms is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and the Iowa Farm Bureau.

Also attending the ceremony were Pfeifer’s children, Cheryl Collins of Cedar Rapids, Roger Pfeifer of Lawrence, Kan., and George Pfeifer of Wayland, and grandchildren, Elizabeth Collins of Cedar Falls, and David Hughes-Pfeifer and Malory Hughes-Pfeifer of Lawrence, Kan.
