Chamber kicks offArt Walk on square

By David Hotle | Jul 11, 2017

The artistic side of Washington will be showcased throughout the remainder of July as Art Walk 2017 will be featured in businesses around the square from July 17 through July 31.

Beginning Monday, for the remainder of July, businesses in the downtown area will feature the works of local artists. Community members are invited to come out and tour the downtown area and see the works.

“Our downtown retailers will be partnering with local artists and will be featuring their art displays in storefronts,” Washington Chamber of Commerce director Michelle Redlinger said. “It’s a self-walking tour around the downtown and it is a way we can get more exposure to our artists and appreciate that part of our community, which is very vibrant and is growing.”

A preview for the event will be held this evening with an Alive After 5 at the L.E.T.’s Center (Learn, Embrace, and Transform) for Healing and Creative Arts at 114 N. Iowa Ave. An unveiling of the L.E.T.’s Center’s tubular creations, in which water softener tubes have been sold, also will be held. These are decorated and will be auctioned off to benefit the L.E.T.’s Center and the artists. The L.E.T.’s Center for Healing and Creative Arts is a group that helps facilitate the needs of artists. The event is expected to showcase about 30 tubes. This year’s theme is animals to celebrate the group’s partnership with PAWS & More.

There will be an auction of the tubes on July 29 from noon to 2 p.m. Half the proceeds will benefit PAWS & More.

Redlinger said last year about nine stores and eight artists had participated in the event.

“It is an event that is a nice partnership and it is something that we hope brings people downtown,” Redlinger said.

Redlinger said the list of artists who will display their work on the square is not complete. She said the list will be released as soon as possible.
