Charges filed in cold case murder

Dec 01, 2017

An arrest has been made in a missing person cold case from 2000.

The husband of 22-year-old Elizabeth Syperda, who went missing from Mt. Pleasant in 2000, has been arrested and charged with her murder in the first degree. Michael Lee Syperda, 52, was arrested in Rifle, Co., and taken into custody without incident late Thursday night, Iowa DCI Acting Special Agent Ryan Kedley said.

Syperda’s arrest comes after the 17 year cold case was reopened by the Mt. Pleasant Police Department in March of 2017.

Through case review and interviews, the case was reclassified as a homicide investigation and a grand jury was convened. The investigation was a joint effort of the police department, the Henry County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office. The jury elected to conduct a true indictment arrest of Syperda.

“At some point,” Syperda will be extradited back to Iowa, Kedley said. Further information regarding case files and testimony is sealed at this time; however, Kedley said “if and when” a case goes to trial, a lot of that information will be addressed in a public trial.

Elizabeth Syperda was last seen July 16, 2000, in Mt. Pleasant, according to the Associated Press.

The Mt. Pleasant Police Department cannot comment at this time.
