City fireworks scheduled

By David Hotle | Jun 28, 2017

Again this year, the City of Washington will hold a fireworks show on July 4 beginning at dusk to celebrate Independence Day.

For many years, the Washington Independence Day celebration lasts all weekend long, and this year is no exception. The events kick off Thursday evening.

Thursday’s events include Thursday Night Live with the Fairfield Big Band from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. followed by the Washington Municipal Band. Traditionally, the band concert immediately preceding Independence Day features many traditional patriotic songs.

The annual fireworks display will begin at about 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Washington City Clerk Illa Earnest said the city sponsors the event.

“It runs about 20 minutes or so and is always enjoyable,” Earnest said. “There are lots of vantage points. A lot of people sit at the fairgrounds and along the roadway. Several folks are up in the cemetery.”
