Eight Fleur-de-Lis Club members and guest, Joyce Gaugler met on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the home of Theresa Hora at 12:30 p.m. for their annual salad luncheon. Members sat around the table decorated for the Christmas holiday with the theme of Christmas trees and enjoyed a variety of salads, chicken casserole and rolls. The hostess had made Christmas tree favors from cardstock inserted in a candy kiss for each member.

Following the luncheon, Nancy Kimmel, president, conducted a short business meeting. Roll call was answered with each telling of a favorite Christmas tree they remembered or a Christmas tree decoration. The secretary and Treasurer reports were read by Linda Birney. A thank-you was received from HACAP for the club’s Christmas contribution that had been delivered.

Theresa Hora following the meeting gave a history of the Christmas tree. She provided many interesting facts concerning the evergreen tree and its symbolism. The evergreen bough is a sign of spring to come and drove the evil spirits away. It was used in a special celebration of the shortest day being Dec. 21. Germany started the Christmas tree tradition back in the 16th century. In 1830, Germans settled in Pennsylvania and had the first Christmas tree. In 1890, ornaments started showing up on trees by addition of cranberries and popcorn. The first lighted Christmas tree at the White House showed up in 1923. In 1933 Rockefeller Center had the first public display of Christmas trees. Christmas trees are grown in all states in the U.S. and it takes 6-8 years for a tree to mature for cutting of Christmas trees. These were just a few of the interesting facts she provided. Following the program, she handed out a Christmas Riddle Quiz and two of the gals answered all correctly.

The remainder of the afternoon was spent visiting and listening to background Christmas music and munching on Christmas sweets of assorted cookies.

The club will not meet during the months of January and February. The March meeting will be husbands/guest Night out on March 22, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. Kathy Ebert will be the hostess and make arrangements for the evening out.
